Restaurant expansion

Well everyone, the Murphy salad bar has undergone expansion.

Sunday morning my H walked out toward the pond, and guess who was there? Our most unexpected guest, Great Blue Heron.

Fishing.

Successfully.

Cleaned us out except for one small goldfish.

And here I thought I had seen it all with the deer, groundhogs, raccoons, fox, possums, rabbits, chipmunks, moles, voles, and mice. Sigh.

Did you know that feeder goldfish grow pretty big pretty fast? And at about 10 cents a piece, it hurts a lot less when Mr. Heron and Mr. Raccoon come to dine than when they munch out on on koi.

Sorry to hear about your loss to the Heron.

If you want them I have an overstock of shabunkins and comets 4-5 inchers. I'm in Clinton MD.

I have had herons, and finally gave in and put nets up year round. My large koi are so loved, I couldn't bear it. Even though I have a lot of waterlilies in the summer, I like the net anyway. I cut some bamboo (happy to let you have some at the spring swap) and criss-crossed it across the pond, then the netting on top. Has worked like a charm, and is hardly visible. I leave some room at the edges so birds don't get caught in it and I check it once a day (sometimes junior fish jump up and into it -- no casulaties yet.
