| 2007Spring MAG Swap: Plants you Have List
DIRECTIONS for the HAVES list:
This thread is not for your Wants. :) That's what the MAG Spring Swap: Plants you Want thread is for.
Do NOT arrange the swap or trade on this thread, please.
When you bring your plants, MARK RESERVED PLANTS (i.e., plants for which you have a pre-arranged swap). LABEL your plants if possible. We often forget which was what by the time we get them home! Popsicle stick, plastic spoons, or other "plantable markers" are great, as they can be popped right in to the ground along with the plant. At the swap, please do NOT take anything that is labeled for someone else, or is NOT labeled "Free" or "Please Take." Ask. That's all you have to do.
Did I forget anything? Of course! So, let me know so I can fix it! Wishing everyone a great swap! Happy gardening,
Follow-Up Postings:

| It's totally nuts to do this now, when I haven't even the faintest notion what will live or die, but when has that ever stopped me? This list is purely speculative at this point. I will add/subtract once I have an actual head count of what lived and died, and what I can root/divide/otherwise propagate, and of course, what lived that I even forgot I have. Pretty much everything in my 'Have Plenty Of' list, I will definitely have plenty of. The updates will be done on my trades page here: http://www.gardenweb.com/members/exch/suja The highly speculative list: Plants I'll have in limited quantities For MAG swap purposes, I will only bring the plants I have plenty of, by request. I always have plenty of: |

| I can't bring them all. I will only be bringing plants I have requests for. Of course, I will bring a few extras, but if you are interested in something, speak up! Even if you don't have anything to trade me, let me know and I'll still bring it if I can.

| It's too early for me to know exactly what I'll have but there will be an assortment of veggies, herbs, annuals and perennials, some pretty good sized plants depending on what I have extras of in the greenhouse at the time of the swap. I'll have to see how successful my attempt at winter sowing has gone as far as seedlings go. I should also have some seeds leftover. I'll update here when I have a better idea of what I'll have. Karyn |

| Does anyone want things like nursery pots, trays, etc? If that's of any interest I can bring some along with the plants and seeds. Karyn |
| Mudsquopper, I'll take some your ice plants. Not sure what I have yet. |
| The only certain things in my garden are azaelas (fushia, white, pink, red)and English Ivy. Plenty of each of those. I will post later if I find anything else. Jen |

| Karyn, The answer is yes. Bring nursery pots and trays. People always take them, whether they are little or big. I personally can use a bunch of 3-6 inch nursery pots. |
| Forsythia for KimKa and anyone else who wants some. (No trade required.) Typing it here so I won't forget who wanted it. I won't have a real list until it all starts coming up and I realize I'm being overrun. So be sure to put your needs on the 'wants' list, and you might be surprised. I don't really do pre-trades, I just bring it if I have it and someone indicated they were looking for it.... |

| Have: COREOPSIS seedlings--tickseed species, I think. I'll pot up a whole bunch rather than toss them on the compost! Free to anyone or will trade. I'd hate to throw them away. Do let me know ahead of time if you want them, so I can be sure to have one or more for you. |

| Is anyone willing to take African Violets? I started with a few leaves expecting one plant per leaf. Surprise, from a few I got 7 or 8 babies. Obviously, I've had a population explosion on these and need to make some room. I'm sure I'll have outdoor stuff too but for now I KNOW I have too many violets. |

| Just wanted to share my trade list...I'm definitely coming this year, I've even requested off work already. ;) Peace, Nate Cuttings Seeds: I have a huge number of seeds from Horizon Herbs that I’ve been keeping in the fridge at school. So I have goldenseal and American ginseng seeds as well as many other native plants/herbs, but they're getting a few years old so germination might be iffy. |
| Having just moved don't have a lot of different items but I have a lot of items listed here. I am not sure of the colors of any items that don't list the color but here is what I have which I have lots of: -Achillea (not sure of color) |
| I'm not sure of Latin names for these, but I have a bunch of liriope (Jason, I tried to email you but don't know if it went through), some good size hostas that need splitting, a whole bunch of stonecrop, and what I have been told is vinca. I'll try to post pics on mypage, I joined not long ago and haven't played much with the site. Lynne (zachsmom at iname dot com) |

| Hi All: See my trade list. Or dig what you want when you come to the spring swap. I posten my wants, and I have quite a few (on the want list). I am so looking forward to the whole event. I will also have some water features for a deck for an extra good trade, and some ornaments. Drop me a line and I'll describe as best as I can, or come early, because the early bird ............. |
| My friend and I might be able to make the swap. She isn't a GW member, but I'm dragging her along. She has some Mayapple (hopefully growing by then) that she'd like to trade for Virginia Bluebells. I will have a few Resurrection Lily bulbs (aka Naked Ladies). If the native honeysuckle comes back after my efforts at removing a lot it, I may have some of that, too. Will update as I see what extra things I have growing. LeslieS, I'm zee elsewhere, so we may get to meet after all. |
| Not lots of any of these, but here goes. Forget-Me-Not - Myosotis (not sure which) Chrysogonum virginianum (Green and Gold-Allen Bush I think) Columbine (Aquilegia - blue flowered) Verbena bonariensis - maybe - last fall I threw away a lot Sedum spurium - John Creech Sedum oreganum - Glaucum Sedum spurium Fuldaglut Sedum sexangulare S. Kamtschaticum S. Blue Carpet Passiflora caerulea (again, threw out lots - not sure if I'll have any runners left) Regarding the Sedums, I'm not sure I'll be able to correctly identify which is which on a few. |
| Hi! I'm new to the swap and a bit shy about meeting new people, but here goes! I will have lots of the following: Stella d'Oro daylilies Limited quantities of: Siberian iris, deep blue, unnamed Limited quantities of the following pond plants: Waterlily, red-flowered, labelled as N. 'pygmaea rubra' but I don't believe it Very limited quantities of the following tropical houseplants: Sanseveria laurentii (snake plant) Seedlings - a few, assorted, whatever I end up with extras of, mostly perennial and annual flowers Possibly some garden ornaments and/or pots and trays - if I get around to cleaning out the shed! Maybe some extra gardening magazines and/or books - if I get around to cleaning out the bookshelves! I'll update the list on my GardenWeb swap page - check first to see if something you especially want is spoken for. |
| Please email me - I'm trying to contact you but can't seem to get through. Thanks! |

| Okay, this may be a little weird, but since I don't have a lot of plants to bring to the swap, (and after playing today in the yard) I think it's a valid offer, especially if you love to garden but hate or have problems digging the big hunks. I will haul my rototiller to you and dig your garden, within 20 or so miles of Bowie, MD (but the distance is negotiable, especially if the route doesn't involve the beltway). I looked into renting one for a few hours or a day and that was pretty reasonable, but when I found one at a pretty good price that was easy for me to handle, I bit the bullet and bought it and am SO glad I did! Love it Love it Love it. There's not going to be much lawn left in the front yard by the time I'm done - but I'll have plenty of room for all the plants that I got from Susan plus whatever ends up in my truck at the swap! =) Lynne |

| Bunnie Compost. That reminds me, have we heard from Prof Dirt of manure and compost fame? |
| Oh--I also have a bunch of white Physostegia. I don't know the exact variety. Is this stuff a weed? It's going nuts in my garden..... |
Here is a link that might be useful: My Physostegia looks like this
| I've looked for, but couldn't find, information on how the plants for the swap should be prepared. When trading hostas by mail, people would wash off all soil from the roots, wrap the hosta in dampened newspaper or paper towels and plastic bags. Is it acceptable to do the swap plants in the same manner, or do they have to be in soil? That could be a problem, because I don't have any extra pots. Thanks. |
| Bunny manure? Someone wants bunny manure? I have a giant chinchilla bun and for one bunny, she produces a LOT of bunny manure (or at least my huband thinks so..) I didn't realize this was a potentially useful swap item - I have been dumping it in the flower beds and onto what might eventually become a compost pile, but mostly because we have a low spot in the yard and we're trying to fill it little by little.. I'm in Bowie.. Lynne |
| Ruthie, obedient plant is native to the area and that is probably why it is doing so well, but definitely not a weed to most people. Very pretty indeed though! Z, most people put their stuff in pots, but that is because we all have so many from obsessively buying plants from the garden centers. :-D Wet paper towels or newspaper are also acceptable, but might be harder to do for bigger plants. You could also try using plastic bags so that you can keep a bit of moist soil for the roots. |
| Z, I'll be bringing empty pots to the swap (I ended up with most of the leftover pots at Susan's on Saturday), and I'm sure others will be bringing extras as well, so even if you bring your plants in newspapers or bags, they'll probably end up in a pot before the day is done. Or if you're reasonably close to Bowie, we can link up and you can have some ahead of time. I'll be out of town next week but will be around after that. Lynne |
| Z - a chunk of plant in wet newspaper is acceptable. Don't do anything so twee as washing off the roots. I will not be doing my vegetable garden but I am starting a bunch of peppers and tomatoes for those who are interested, also any other seeds that strike my fancy. I will also bring rooted cuttings of Sedum "Blue Spruce", even with this strange winter it managed to grow a foot in all directions. i have it in my hellstrip bed where it gets no water and no love and it looks fabulous. And as ever, about 10 pots of autumn clematis. Looks like we have a lot of newbies - yeah - just remember we don't always do things by direct trade, A gives to B who gives to C who gives to A, so be open to "paying it forward" and depending on serendipity to fill your cars up again. |
| To keep on topic I HAVE a liking for the word twee. It comes up all the time in computer Boggle. I like bosh, too. That one can be slipped into conversations more easily than twee. Are you British? |

| Hi - patapscomike can you post your email - there does not seem to be one attached to your account. |

| Hi Jen -- I couldn't find your email address. I'm interested in the orchid baskets you have left and have Asarum canadense which you have on your want list. Please email me if interested (mea DOT zick AT arbitron DOT com -- I'm not sure why everyone isn't using the characters in the email addresses, but I'm following suit). Larry and Watergal, I'll email you tonight. Mea |
| I also have Mayapples (Podophyllum peltatum) and most likely lemon balm (I pulled out most of it last year, but I'm sure some is coming up somewhere!) Mea |
| The reason people are writing out their email addresses is to keep spam robots from "harvesting" them. From what I understand, there are automated programs that scour bulletin boards, pull off the email addresses, and then send spam to them. They aren't programmed to find the addresses if they don't have the usual "at" and "dot" characters in them. Of course, I wasn't clever enough to do that earlier in this thread, so I guess I can look forward to even more spam. Yippee! |

| Giverny--is the spice bush still available? I would like it if it is. You can e-mail me at: DawnPalka AT Verizon DOT net. Hope the spammers don't catch on to our evasive technique! |
| I should have these, subject to the usual weather and pest-related contingencies. Will probably add other perennials later, once I have a better idea what's wintered over. This year's seedlings or volunteers, unless otherwise specified. Quantities of most are limited. Alyssum saxatile In-person trades in advance of the swap are fine, too (Read: I'd rather not have to water a bunch of pots for longer than necessary!) I'm in Hyattsville, about 2 miles from Univ. of MD. Sounds like direct email is better than Gardenweb referrals. My address is: sfmiller AT umd DOT edu Steven |
- Posted by gardnwatch z7MD (My Page) on Mon, Apr 9, 07 at 18:04
| Mea, I think the main reason why others are not using the gardenweb link to email is because some of the emails sent that way are not going through to the recipients. We started using direct email when a few of us emailed each other during Susan's garden digging and we couldn't get through to one another. Messages were missed. It was frustrating. Another good result I guess is to keep the "spam robots" from getting in. Bonnie |
| I just saw Watergal looking for covered plastic buckets on the 'have' thread. I always bring a dozen or so compliments of the kitties :-) Alas, the source is drying up as I've switched to 'World's Best Cat Litter' which comes in plastic bags. But the stack in the freezer room is towering at the moment, so I do hope others still want these. Also remembered that Steven wanted a cutting of the pink brug which I got from him a few years ago. It's been in water in gh all winter and is root city. I'll need to pot that up to get it used to soil..... |

| Besides the black and red raspberries (originally from Minnesota) and catmint, I also have: Aloe vera Houseplants: Also: (only if someone asks for it) Question: I have a lot of volunteer peach trees coming up from the compost from great local fruit. I don't know anything about fruit trees. Does anyone know if it is worth trying to raise a couple to maturity? Does anyone want any of them? Madeleine |
| With a few exceptions, I don't have a whole lot of any one thing, so it would be wise to reserve if you see something you really want. Vinca (periwinkle vine) Kim |
| I also have an abundance of a mystery fern that was here when I moved in. Mature height is about 3 - 4', upright habit, though the fronds will trend outward after a heavy rain, woody base that almost looks as if someone buried a pinecone. It self-propagates with underground runners (stolons?) and does so very enthusiastically if it's happy. It can take a few hours of direct afternoon sun without problem. It's very happy where it is, and I'd be very happy to share if this sounds like a solution to your landscaping problem. Personally, I want the space for other things. |

| I also found on Friday I have extras of: What I believe to be euonymous 'Wintercreep' - it was here when I bought the place, and it's my best guess. Spiderwort 'Osprey', which has a pretty white bloom with striking blue stamens. A black-eyed Susan variety which I've now forgotten, and my stupid metal tags all faded. It's uhm.. Rudbeckia anonymous. Whatever variety it is, it is tolerant of a good bit of shade, volunteers freely and attracts a beautiful yellow finch I'm afraid I don't know the name of either. |

| I have a question. What happens to all of the plant that nobody wants after the swap? Okay, two questions. Do people have to take their offerings back home with them if no one else wanted them? Maybe three. How large are the plants that most people trade? I don't want to be skimpy in what I offer, but I do want to be able to share with many the limited amount of plants that I have. No more questions -- for now. |
| I don't know how often it happens that no one wants a plant. Usually, there are enough newbies around that are happy to take just about any plant off someone's hand. However, we do have rules to deal with such contingencies. If, after lunch, you look at a plant someone still has, you have to take one. If you ask about it, you have to take two. Also, be careful about leaving the trunk/door of your car open; some people aren't beyond sneaking a plant or two in there while you aren't looking. As for the size of plants, I've received anything from itty-bitty seedlings to ginormous shrubs. It's hard to mandate size, because some plants (like Iris) can be given out in huge clumps, while a pickier, slower growing perennial or small plant may only make tiny divisions. The way I see it, I don't give out plants if I don't feel that they'll grow for me. The smallest are generally in Bluestone perennial size containers, and my largest are generally in gallon pots. I also have a tendency to compensate for smaller plants by giving more of them. Suja |
| Oops, I have more: Abutilon 'Souvenir de Bonn' Heucheras I think it's called tapestry mix or something like that. Anyway, they have chartreuse leaves |

| I still have no idea what plants I'll be bringing. There will be some tomato seedlings for sure. Probably some brug cuttings. I'll also have market packs of annuals and some 4" potted plants. I'll also probably have some seedlings from what I winter sowed that didn't make it into the garden. I'll also have nursery pots and trays. A couple people emailed me with specific requests but the only one I remember was Nate's voodoo lily. If you emailed me about a particular plant can you send me a reminder? Karyn |
| I posted a list upthread but have added a few things (marked with **) and deleted stuff that's spoken for. All are seedlings or garden volunteers unless otherwise specified. Alyssum saxatile Brugmansia (from cuttings) **'New Dawn' rose, from cuttings Anything on my wants list (link below) would be welcome. Or an oakleaf hydrangea or clethra to replace winter casualties. Or sweet autumn clematis to hide an ugly patch of neighbor's fence. Steven |

Things are still popping up, but here's what I have for sure right now: Forsythia Tomatoes (all small seedlings, only one or two of each): Figs (rooted cuttings, one of each): I'll probably bring some extra wintersown seedlings as well (zinnias, dahlias, cosmos, agastasche, impatiens, marigolds, etc.). --Jean |

| Anyone interested in pond plants besides foodeefish? They are kind of a pain to pack and bring unless I know someone will be interested in them. (Don't worry, foodeefish, I'll bring yours!) How 'bout houseplants? I have some extra tropical foliage plants I really don't have room for. |

| One more addition to my have list: Castor bean seedlings WARNING: When they will set seeds, the seeds are highly poisonous to pets and kids (and adults too). The foliage is also somewhat poisonous. Poisonous only if you eat them, not to the touch. My dog has developed a taste for grazing on the foliage, so I have decided not to plant these. Anyone want them? They get quite tall very fast, good for a tropicalismo bed. |

| I have a kidney shape plastic pond liner- It's approximately 2.2' X 4.5'. I am willing to trade for vegetale plants- tomatoes, Peppers, Eggplant, any veggies. |
| As a "seasoned" newbie having attended the last 2 swaps, I still am not up to speed with the proper latin names of most plants. I have the following to trade: Varigated leaf Liriope Also noticed an interest in bunny manure--we use in our organic vegetable garden, so I have a limited amount I could bring. |

| Here's an update: My tomato seedling crop has been really poor this year for some reason. I will have several, though. I will also have a few sweet peppers, and some roses: - A huge "Banshee" - pink, fragrant, once-bloomer. Henrietta, do you want it for your rose hedge? - A smaller "Banshee" - a "Shailer's Provence" - a couple of very small plants of the noisette Crepuscle - note that if you live in Zone 6 it probably will be too cold for it I will also have assorted seeds and gardening magazines, and some unidentified iris and maybe some other things I dug up for the fall swap that I missed. Janet M. might have some plants for me to bring along, as she can't make it to the swap. |
| I think my mystery shrub is a spirea. It grows to about waist height (but I think it should have been cut back severely in the fall) and has tiny pink flowers that don't last very long. I have three or four bushes of it that really need a new home. If you want the largest bush in all it's glory, let me know, otherwise, I'm going to cut them all back, divide them and plop them in pots (I'll leave a branch or two for identification, though). I really hope someone wants this - they're nice bushes but in the wrong place in the yard and we just don't like them. Lynne zachsmom at iname dot com |

| Adding to my haves: Ornamental Grass "Dwarf Hamlin" Creeping Jenny (coming out my ears; thanks all!) Monarda "Raspberry Wine" (aggressive reseeder) Monarda "Mahogany" (slow grower, I have less) Monarda "Jacob Klein" (LynnT...?) Plume Poppy (aggressive reseeder, but lacey yellow flowers) Helianthus (AGGRESSIVE reseeder, but electric yellow) In Vlad's honor, if someone's looking for really nice strawberry plants? Let me know. Not only do I have some to share, but I'm heading down to help Erick pot up for the swap. I'm going to have a bunch of this stuff, so don't worry about me running out. I'm willing to travel later to share. Christine |
| Hi, I have lots more things growing then I thought. Here is my updated list. Azalea - large white (only ones the result of layering can be brought to swap) |
| I have four small clumps of St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum). habitatzee aT yahoo dot com |

| I apologize for not posting sooner -- I am studying for a certification exam next Wednesday, and don't know how much time I will have to dig. Check my GW wants list if there is anything you GOTTA have now; I will be happy to have visitors in June for shovel tours (after the next two exams are done, and when the iris will be better divided). For now I have: LynnT |
| Now I learn that I will need to be at a lab Saturday morning -- if there is anything people really need from my list, I will try to get them to Christine's house on Thursday evening or Friday. Sorry, gang! Lynn |

| Gardenwatch, I'd love to trade for your milkweed! I sent you an email through GW, but I know they don't always go through. To add to my 'have's' list: 2 Heuchera 'Purple Palace' (I think) mayo1315 "at" verizon "dot" net Thanks! Christy |
| Will also bring a few seedling clumps of Spotted Jewelweed (Impatiens capensis). zee |
| WaterGal, I'll take those castor bean seedlings. I can plant them in my front yard where my pets are not allowed. Their domain is the grassless backyard. ;) You can e-mail me: DawnPalkaATverizonDOTnet |

| I'm also interested in jewelweed. I wrote to WaterGal about the castor beans, but again, I don't think it went through, either. This is frustrating, isn't it? Perhaps we should arrange a separate thread that says: HAVE: a trade with .... Christine |
| Can you set up a Google or Yahoo! email and get around EarthStink and their blocking? That might be the easiest way to get around this. Also, I seem to have trades setup with about half the people here (you should see my spreadsheet; it's ridiculous!). So, if you want to use me as your proxy, I'll be happy to help in any way I can. | Janet M. dropped off a bunch of alliums for me to take to the swap - she's not sure what variety they are, but the leaves are about a foot tall and the flowers are about the same color as chives flowers. |
| Christine, I'll bring some jewelweed for you. Haven't yet figured out what I might want from your list. Are you still adding to it? zee |
| I found several geranium macrorhizums (I am pretty sure these are 'Ingwersen's Variety') and will bring to swap. |
| I have a tulip poplar(Liriodendron tulipifera)that has to find a new home. It is currently ~ 3 feet tall. Supposedly it doesn't transplant well, probably because not enough of the taproot can be dug out, and it really shouldn't be planted too close to structures. If anyone wants this, I'll try to dig it up versus just chopping it. |
| Additional Haves (seedlings from wintersowing/volunteers): Dianthus "black magic" |

| Wish Design, May I have some of your Corkscrew vine? Zee, I'd take your Tulip Poplar off your hands. :) I'm adding a bit below (3rd time) but if you have a wish list, let me know. There's a chance.... Lynn, if you're still getting rid of your Spirea, I'll come dig it later. We also discussed a fork at Susan's, but got carried away chatting at your truck. If you still have it as an extra, I'd love it. Kilngod, I'd love some Dianthus 'black magic' and Zinnia 'green envy' if you have any left. I've written to everyone about these, but don't think any mail has made it through the frontier. I am adding to my list: Goodness. |
| Christine, I'll bring the tulip poplar for you, but can't promise anything about it's continued lifespan after I dig it up. I don't have a large enough pot, so it will be wrapped in wet newspaper and a plastic bag. Regarding the jewelweed for you and Christy, it will most likely be greatly wilted once it is dug up. However, I sent some to Pennsylvania with my sister once and when she planted it, it perked up -- then the deer ate it. zee |
| Christine, I forgot to say that I'd like some of your Monarda "Mahogany" zee |
| i'm out of the brunnera but should be ok for the rest: Lily of the valley |
| zebz, my neighbor gave me a liriodendron in the fall of 2005 and I moved it last fall when it was already 5' tall to its permanent home. It didn't miss a beat either time (and I wasn't gentle last year (in the cold, in the dark and in the rain). A spring move will probably be harder, but I'll bet it will be OK. |
| I have a bunch of Tulip Poplar, so if this one doesn't work out, Christine is more than welcome to come on over and dig up as many as she'd like. |

| Suja, Would you buy a house closer in? To me? It would be fun... I promise. C. Kaffiena, Thanks! |
| Christine, if Zee's tulip poplar doesn't make it (and Suja decides to stay where she is instead of moving closer in), there is a source in Bowie as well. I got one last fall that did well after transplant but didn't make it through the winter. The person I got them from has many more seedlings/saplings, and I'm sure we could go get one if we ask. You can come dig my spirea (and some hosta) whenever you like. There is a big spirea that has your name on it now. (Sigh of relief!) I'll bring some parts of smaller ones to the swap though, in case anyone else wants some. And I'll try to remember the fork, but if I forget it you can have it when you come get the spirea..oh, wait, maybe I should hold the fork hostage, and you can use it to dig up the spirea.. =) Lynne |
| Christine, I'm not sure either of us can afford to live any closer to each other than we already do. Can you imagine the amount of trouble we'll get into? I'm not sure the wallet (or the marriage) would survive it. |
| Christine, would you like to trade dicentra alba for hosta elvis lives? Tabby |
| i forgot to say blue spruce SEDUM sorry folks btw the crepe myrtle is spoken for now isn't it fun packaging your plants and getting them ready for a new home? ("you my dear are going to live at gardengrammas house" ) |
| zeb i'd love a Spotted Jewelweed seedling |
| Kaffeina, I'll bring some jewelweed for you. Haven't yet figured out what I might want from your list, so I'll take my chances tomorrow. To everyone: I'll be turning off my computer now and won't be back online before the swap. If anyone else requests something, I'll not see it. Sorry. See y'all tomorrow. zee |
