Welcome! I too moved here and was thinking about gardening.

Here, blueberries and other sun-shy plants (rhubarb) would like some shade -- if you can protect them from deer!! You might want to think about fencing.

You will find the gardening season gives you a few more weeks on either end.

I recommend positioning the garden so as to be seen from the house.

Also, the sun is stronger here. I like the light and heart so the main living area of my house faces southwest. It helps heat that area, but this also requires shades being down most of the summer in the afternoon/evening. Since I'm outside then, the shades don't matter to me. In the winter I get the passive solar heat.

It depends what you want to grow. If you'll be concentrating mainly on full sun things like veggies, roses, and sunloving perennials, I would think southfacing would be best, followed next by eastfacing and then westfacing. Of course, that depends on whether there are trees or other buildings shading your growing spaces.

The back of my house faces westnorthwest. This is where the kitchen, dining room and family room face. It gets very hot in the mid to late afternooon on sunny days, especially in summer. I am a light-loving person, though, so I like the sunlight when I am home to enjoy it. But we have to close the blinds to watch TV or eat in the dining room sometimes.

My neighbor across the street has the opposite situation - their master bedroom faces west and gets really hot in late afternoon.
