Great plants for winter

This is a little different than the "what's blooming" thread. I was preparing a talk on plants for winter interest and had the opportunity last week to visit Brookside Gardens. Just up from the visitor center was a great little 'winter' walk area. It is not called that but has a number of witchhazels, some are spectacular, a few camelia, pieris,, nandina, red twig dogwood, etc. Once I really started looking, I appreciated the birches and evergreens too. It is definately worth going while there is snow on the ground. The paperbark maple in the fairy garden practically glowed.

Out at Cylburn, I saw/smelled Lonicera fragrantissama (I think thats right) and it really is fragrant as well as a pleasant surprise in the woods.

Just wanted to share.

M.
