Plastic pots CAN be recycled!

While I think Kim should take all the pots she can get from Jane's landscaper neighbor, he should be aware that plastic post, greenhouse film etc ARE being recycled by Cindarn Recycling in Upperco MD. I learned about this from one of the dozens of magazines I get.

"This is a plastic pot, plug tray, flats and greenhouse film recycling program open to all commercial nurseries and growers in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia and Ohio. They will pay; call for details.

Hmm, he said he has tried various places. He is not a nursery or a grower, just a yardcare/landscaper. Where in MD is Upperco?

It's smack dab between Westminster and Cockeysville, according to google.

Kim, if he has any 6 inch or smaller pots, or parts and pieces for flats, I'll be happy to take a whole bunch of them off his hands - I am the tag-ee for the garden club's plant sale this year..

BTW, if anyone needs plant markers, I hit the mother lode of mini blinds today, and should have PLENTY to share.

Oops, should have said Jane, not Kim, sorry...I got all excited and stopped reading!

I thought I heard at MANTS that this placed closed and now Behnkes cannot accept more plastic pots due to it -- can anyone confirm this place is still open and accepting recycled plant pots?

Dang, I think Amy might be right. I can't find any news story on line later than 2006, and although I read the story in late 2007, the place might have been on its way out by then. We may have have to keep sharing them among ourselves to keep them out of the landfill.

MANTS = MidAtlantic Nursery Trade Show - it is each Jan in Baltimore Convention Center

Let me know if you all hear ANYTHING on pot recycling places that is current - seems such a waste!

I just attended a trade show in Maryland where they spoke about recycling pots, and the speaker was not aware of anywhere in the US that is currently recycling them. Such a waste indeed!!!

I have found that if you offer free pots (craigslist, freecycle, freebies in the newspaper), people will snatch them up.

As I said earlier, I will take all of the 4 inch and bigger plastic pots any body wants to recycle at any time. If you are within a reasonable drive of Silver Spring, I will come and get them. Or you can always drop them off at my house at any time if we can't get together. Since I am going to take a table at my local farmers market again this summer, I will go through lots of pots.

Kimka - I'm in Bethesda - where are you going to be at for the Farmers Market? Downtown Silver Spring?

FYI Behnkes in Beltsville also accepts pots. I took a bunch there last year.

I do the Kensington Farmer's Market, which is at the Train Station on Howard Ave. It runs Saturdays 8-12. I usually start about the middle of May and have a table until October.

I called Steve Wasserman at Cindarn Recycling today and he explained that they only recycle pots from commercial nurseries. They take them on huge pallets of hundreds that are shrink wrapped. He didn't know of any nurseries that have a recycling program like Behnke's used to have.

I also spoke with Alex, the manager at Behnke's, and they are not recycling pots at this time. If they decide to do it again they will post it in their newsletter.

I have about 500 pots of assorted sizes and will try and come to the swap this spring with them.

Thanks for the followup, Newt. At least we know Cindarn is still in business.

If anyone is near owings mills, MD I could use the 4" square white plastic pots. I'll be happy to pick them up.
