Compost lesson learned and a question

Last fall I put some "finished" compost into a large plastic container with some ventilation holes to have for adding to commercial potting mix and for making my own potting soil early this spring. It was only very slightly moist but I figured it had finished working so it would be ok for the long haul. Well, now it's almost a solid block with large clumps of fungi growing in it and is mostly useless for my original intention. I know it is rich and a great source of nutrients but it's really difficult to break up enough to be useable in pots. I'll put it back into my almost finished pile and let it continue to break down so it's not a waste but I was wondering if there was a better way to "preserve" some inside this coming fall for over the winter/early spring use.
