All three should be fully hardy in this area. The rose may not be, if it turns out to be one of the tender roses that does better further south, or one of the types that do better in colder areas. Basically, if these plants were bought from area garden centers or dug from gardens in this area, they'll be fine.

I would definitely not grow raspberries with any plants that play nicely. They spread fairly aggressively from the roots. Your Hydrangea may bloom pink if your soil is alkaline. You may also want to plant it some place where it gets shade during the latter part of the day.

Thanks for your help. FOr some reason I am really nervous about planning and planting this border. Any other advice would be welcome. I have an area that is 12' x 36'. I am thinking of a viburnum or maybe even a forsythia. I would like to grow peonies too but I don't know if they will gorn inthis area.

Sallymay, we live in NE Baltimore County. We have sandy, rocky loam . We grow our peonies in full sun. They love it here. Steve in Baltimore County.

Peonies and hydrangea grow beautifully here. I have several hundred of both. Most roses will do well if you like treating them with fungicide often during the season. I've given up on roses because of black spot fungus. My roses would be beautiful for a month or so but would eventually get black spot. I'd end up with flowers on branches that didn't have a single leaf. Once it gets in the soil it's difficult to erradicate. Our cool damp nights promote all kinds of fungus and powdery mildew.
