Help - leaf mulch problem?

Barbara E

I have great organic soil, and for a number of years I have spread composted leaf mulch that I get from Fairfax County on my vegetable and flower beds with great success. Five days ago I spread this year's delivery around everything and suddenly my tulips, lilies, columbine, kale, lettuce and daylilies seems to be getting chlorotic and in some cases dying. I have cheap pH meter probe which seems to suggest that my soil is close to 6 and the mulch I spread has a pH of 4.5 I know these meters are not that reliable but it suggests I have a problem. What is the best way to bring up the acidity - lime? hydrated lime? This is a problem I have never had before and its very scary now that planting season is upon us and given that my established plants seem to be in shock. I can't just remove the mulch - we spread about 7 cubic yards. I could dig it into the veggie beds with some lime. Any thoughts? Thanks from Alexandria.
