| For checking out a vendor, even one that is named "FreeTreesandPlants", I recommend the Garden Watchdog site (now a part of another website) http://davesgarden.com/gwd/ here is the result for the vendor you asked about http://davesgarden.com/gwd/c/3403/ "Free trees and plants" received mainly positive reviews in 2005. The plants are generally small and "bare root", as you might expect for freebies, but most people reported that the orders were filled correctly and the plants were alive. | I have a further comment on Free Trees and Plants. I am skeptical by nature, so when I first heard the name/concept, I was suspicious that they might be trying to "unload" invasive or other less desirable plants (some of the ones that are frequently mentioned on "I wish I never planted ..." threads, and/or "nemesis" plants on Native Plants and allied forums). But that isn't the case at all. On looking through their inventory, I didn't spot any of the well-known non-native invasive trees, shrub, or perennials (that are unfortunately still popular with some vendors and gardeners). Further I saw many natives and other desirable plants, including some less well-known, at least not often carried by the "big box" retail stores. I encourage you to try out Free Trees and Plants and report back with your experience. |

| Just looking at the site, it seems that for the cost of shipping, $7.95 of "each" tree or bush or plant, you can get the same at any greenhouse. This site says they are selling overstock from greenhouses but I don't know many greenhouses that are selling 18" maple trees! I was quite disappointed when I got to the site. I can get 25 maple saplings (18") for $25 from the county. That's $1 each! |
