adding some spice to a pachysandra bed

Hi,

I have a large bed of pachysandra under and around a mulberry tree in front of the house. There is an area in the middle of the bed that has gotten euonymous scale on and off for several years, eradicated painstakingly by hand and Volck oil every two years or so...A bunch of pachysandra died last year and the patch was filled with weeds. Just spent some time getting rid of the weeds by hand and would like to fill in the area with something a little different than more pachysandra (since it will die again in time). Was thinking of getting some epimediums but they are kinda expensive. Small dwarf shrubs? Any suggestions? Thanks!
