How do I get crepe myrtles to bloom longer?

I planted a 1/2 doz. crepe myrtles about 3 years ago and they are great. However, they don't bloom very long. Others in my neighborhood bloom all summer. I suppose mine could be a different cultivar, but I was hoping someone could give me some advice on how to increase the bloom season. Someone advised me to remove the seed balls that follow the bloom. If this is the best way, how should I do so? Should I pick off each one, or can I clip off the whole cluster? Any help is greatly appreciated.
