The one I got, that is notoriously hardy, is 'Bracken's Brown Beauty'. It is well known for the brown indumentum under the leaves and for it's hardy character. I have yet to hear or read a bad word about this plant. I only planted it last week after wintering it in a pot buried to the rim in wood chips. I had not decided exactly where I wanted it.

What you are talking about is likely a cultivar of Magnolia grandiflora. The link below is a page listing many cultivars. I almost purchased a 'Little Gem' from Meadows Farms last year, but passed.
