Excited about the first garden.

I just found GardenWeb and I'm thrilled with the amount of info. So I figured I'd introduce myself. My wife and I will be planting our first vegetable garden this year. It will be containers because we are hoping to move this Summer. We are going to go with the standards. Tomatoes, peppers, cukes, zucchini, snap beans, limas and some herbs. We are also going to try some watermelons if we can come up with a suitable container.

We were so excited about doing it this year, we planted the seeds about a month ago. The plants look great, but we will definately not be planting this early next year. We also won't use those plastic seedling cells next year.

Thanks for all the info and any words of wisdom that you folks can offer a newbie would be appreciated.

Welcome, fritz! Glad to meetcha.

You're going to put zucchini and watermelons in containers - they move them? Yikes! I'd like to see you wrestle those into the back of the car! Get your peas in (the ground) now - they'll be done before you want to move.

Basil makes a great potted herb. Sage, thyme, marjoram, mint and tarragon all do fine in pots too and can go into the ground (except the mint which should be caged and watched like a hawk) when you get to your permanent spot.

If you like growing veggies, consider putting an asparagus patch in when you get to your new place, too (it's perennial). And don't forget to plant your garlic in this fall!

We have a batch of various greens in a pot on the kitchen table.

As for moving the big pots, I'll be recruiting a couple friends with strong backs and weak minds. hehe

When we have an option, we are concentrating on early producers.

Thanks for the info. And I fully intend to plant onions and garlic this fall.

Hi Fritz,

You'd want to plant onions in early spring in our climate. I plant mine April 1st for harvest the end of June. (usually)

Lima beans...it takes a lot of lima bean plants to get enough beans to make a meal so those might not be the best choice for growing in a container. But yes, get those peas planted now.

Peppers do great in a container and I winter over a few special ones in an unheated room. I also grow mint in a pot. NEVER in the ground...it's a sneaky plant that can become a weed if you turn your back. I love it tho.

Good luck to you!

What are you planning to plant the watermelons in, a bathtub?

Stay with things that can actually live in containers & you will be happy -- after you move & start a garden with more room, you can plant watermelons & anything else that takes up real estate. Anyway, how many watermelons can you eat? Buy them next summer & grow the things that will be easier to move, for now.

Sounds like you will have a great time! Good luck!
