Hardy gardenia's not that hardy to to zero degree

All my hardy gardenia's that I had since last 4-5 years died this year. I do not see any green growth at all. Whole plant is with dried brown stem and leaves. My chuck hayes, crown prince, frost proof that were 3-3 ft tall all are in bad shape this year due to harsh winter we had this year so far. I will keep these until end of May to see if I see any life in them then I am going move them out.

Did anyone in Mid-Atlantic area (Northern Virginia) have any of their hardy gardenia's survive this year? Can you let me know if you have taken any action other than mulching them to protect them this winter?
