Does anyone know what kind (if any) type of cherry tree has deep growing roots? I want to plant one on the corner of my lawn but have the problem that my leach field for my septic is within 20 or 30 feet of the place I want to plant it. Am I crazy for wanting to plant one in this area? How far away should any type of tree be away from a septic leach field??

A dwarf or semi-dwarf cherry planted 20 feet away from a septic drainage field will not cause any problems. The roots extend only a little beyond the spread of the branches, and the branches of a semi-dwarf cherry will only reach 8' or so from the trunk at maturity. Go for it!

thanks for the info! I so wanted a tree there and to know the roots won't cause major problems down the road is welcome news. My lawn is a big empty canvas right now and I'm so excited to get digging! Now to figure out what perennials to group with the tree!? Any suggestions? Its a south facing lawn with plenty of sun.
