I always just stuck them in the ground, but that seems to make a lot of sense.
What color hollyhocks did you get?

They're mixed colors; several tubers to a bag, which i haven't opened up yet. The bag says not to plant before frost date, so now I'm wondering if i really have to wait till May 1...after all, hollyhocks are supposed to be hardy?

I thought our last frost date was around the 21st. (Kim?)
I don't know. Mine are doing just fine, but they started this season already in the ground.

Hi, I also bought the bag of hollyhocks from Costco. I purchased it around Easter. I opened the bag imediately and found there were white sprouts on each root ball. Some were begining to rot. I planted them right away so they wouldn't rot in the bag. However, I went away for the weekend and when I came back they were gone/eaten up, I assume. I hear they are liked by rabbits and slugs. New sprouts have not returned and I am worried they will not make it. So, I am wondering if you had anything amiss with your bagged hollyhocks, and if they are sprouting now.

I thought hollyhock was biennial, and I didn't know they were tubers. I grew 2 from seed 3 years ago, and it is coming up again. I was very suprised that they survived :) Christy

The hollyhock in the bag were bare-roots -- my mistake!!

I've bought quite a few bags from costco over the years of different plants (liatris, hollyhock, lilies, etc.) with variable results. I think only the lilies really took off.

The hollyhocks, BTW, are gone. This is a year later. They never grew, and nothing there now either.
