Powdery Mildew on Lilacs ALREADY??

I saw a small article in the Post's gardening section today which indicated that if lilac leaves are looking curled or browned on the edges that it is probably powdery mildew developing. My lilac does look this way and I did have this problem last year. It is a small bush, only 2 or 3 years old, and I have yet to get a single lilac from it. The article says to cut off all affected foliage and to clean away any dropped leaves. Should I also spray it with a copper type spray to fight the mildew? It seems so early to have this problem already, but I'm a newbie to gardening, so what do I know? Any advice would be greatly welcomed. I'm half tempted to pull it out and try something else, but that seems premature. Help!
