I live in temple hills and experimented with my cannas and EE's last winter. some i took up the others I buried with leaves and/or leaves in blactic trash bags. will probably do this with all nest fall MAry

It is definitely NOT too late to plant cannas. I've got lots that need to get planted out in the next few weeks.

As to overwintering, you can always try. Just be prepared to buy this variety again next season, if you leave your only division outside in the ground. If your plant grows well this year, you ought to have plenty of rhizomes to experiment with next year.

I left some of the wilder varieties outside last winter & had good success. It was such a mild winter, though, that it may not be a good yardstick to measure against. Good drainage & a protected location defintely seem to help.

I hope yours do well.
I planted Red Futurity, Lanape, and something else really red at the end of April.

So far, although hope springs eternal, these cannas have not. For me, at least.

About 6 years ago, I got two canna rhyzomes on a swap; I've been planting the descendents ever since. I live in Wheaton and I always dig up my cannas before the first hard frost. About a year or two ago, I left some in the ground as an experiment and they did not survive the winter. My advice/opinion? Dig 'em up in the fall.
