Name of caterpillar, Silver Spring Maryland

What is this caterpillar?

I've started seeing many of these soon after beginning my perennial garden, and wanted to know the environmentally friendly way of either getting rid of them, or if they are truly a pest to worry about for any specific plants? So far they haven't eaten anything, but I'm concerned they might.

Definitely a tent caterpillar. I grew up in Silver Spring and by Mother's Day the roads were covered with them (tough driving). My father used to give my kids a penny for each one they collected, they made out like bandits. Enjoy
