Mums blooming now?

I bought some chrysanthemums last year and planted them to see if they would survive the winter. They survived and now are covered in buds and some are partially open. Do I have freak mums, or do they normally bloom in late Spring but nurseries keep the buds trimmed to prevent blooming till Fall?
