Tomatoes received at swap...

... are doing great!! I received a Roma tomato plant that has four green ripening tomatoes and about 15 flowers so far (is it normal that these tomatoes look a little concave in the middle?), and a "novice tomato grower" tomato that I think was called Sungold? that I buried up to its middle in compost, and sprinkled with lacewing eggs. It has adjusted to its new size and the leaves are looking very healthy. Seems to be budding.

Thank you SO much to the swappers/donors!! I think Cecilia gave me at least one, possibly both? I am looking forward to my very first year of success with tomato plants, knock on wood! To help avoid fungus, I planted them in very large pots of my garden compost, in the middle of the driveway. Certainly there's good air circulation there, and it's sunnier than the rest of the yard. I also put on those red plastic soil-covers, although come to think of it, I forgot to put them back on after I watered last. One more thing to do tomorrow.

Yes, Julia - you probably got that Sungold from me. I'm not aware of any other folks who were giving that particular variety away at the swap. Sungold is an orange cherry with a very sweet, fruity taste. If you have kids, they'll eat it like candy. Come to think of it, I eat it like candy myself!

The Sungold plant in my garden has green tomatoes already! Won't be long now!

Steve, I've put it in a big pot full of homemade compost, and set the pot in as much sun as I could provide. I give it frequent pest patrol (those lacewings helped, and I started both tomato plants off with occasional hard, thorough spritzes of water/milk/baking soda/dishsoap/Tabasco sauce/garlic oil), and a long watering every 4 days or so. You furnished a fabulously healthy plant, which I think was the most important ingredient; thanks!!!
