What is this mystery tree? Avocado?

I live in Arlington, VA and I have a deciduous tree that grows very well in my backyard. A few years ago it started producing fruit that kind of looks like round limes. Inside, the fruit has a large pit like an avocado. It doesn't appear edible (it looks and smells awful). The leaves look kind of like sumac. Any idea what it might be? I have a picture but I'm new to this forum and don't know how to attach.
