mystery plant, cucurbit family

initially it looks like a watermelon seedling. it looks and creeps like a member of the cucumber/squash/melon family. it is very prolific, with large heart-shaped velvety leaves, the largest of those being about 8 inches in diameter. the stem is very smooth rather than hairy. it has white flowers, much larger than the cucumber flowers. unfortunately, it smells like a combination of tobacco smoke and sewer. it appeared spontaneously in my garden next to my compost pile and so initially i thought it was some kind of melon. but the smell makes me think it is not an edible variety. does anyone know what it might be? thanks, madeleine
