success with fruit trees in Virginia

I've had two years with white power mildew working its way up the trunk of my cute little fruit trees. Ortho indicates that the high humidity will do it. Has anyone found a way to grow them successfully - I'm just talking a few fruit trees for color - the Bonfire Peach is a beauty with burgandy leaves - who cares about the fruit with that color. Anyway, it starts at the bottom of the trunk and then works its way up, eventually killing the small tree. two in two years now - should I just give up? I bought copper soap but after 10 days, not seeing any results in the one I haven't completely killed yet. Comments, thoughts?
