Transplanting alpine strawberries

pigpen3

Hi all!
I started alpine strawberries from seed this year, and grew them in a Babylon bag. The plants are doing very well, and even blossomed this year. I have been told they won't last the winter in the bag, as the roots are too unprotected this way. Is this true? If so, I can put them in the ground, but when should I do this? When is it too late to plant for the winter? Is there a way I can protect them in the bag, so I can plant then next Spring?
Thanks for any help.
