Sounds like salvia coccinea- an half hardy perennial (don't think its hardy here). It comes in pink, white, red, and peachy pink. If it is, save the seedheads and start indoors a month before last frost. Very easy to grow and blooms all season. I couldn't live without this salvia.

That color also exists in S. greggii, so if the leaves are small and oval rather than largish and more or less triangular, that might be what you have.

My guess is that it's S coccinea, which I brought. It's very easy from seed.

S. uliginosa made it through last winter in the ground for me and this year, was a sprawling mass of a plant that started blooming in May and hasn't stopped yet. Despite its bog origins, I only watered it once all year and it didn't seem to care. I've got some of the happiest bees in Virginia!

Leslie, I have S. uliginosa in a fairly well drained spot, and it is trying to take over the world. I can't imagine what it'd do if I were to put it some place that it really likes.

I think I may be the one guilty of bringing Salvia Ulginosa to the spring swap. I got it last Summer from Windy Hill Nursery in N.Va that was sadly going out of business and had a great sale. It made it through the winter fine and spread, which was why I had plenty for the Spring swap.It does sprawl, but flowers for months!
I also have Salvia farinacea that has survived the last couple of winters despite being rated zone 8-10.
