small potted trees for zone 4

I love the idea of small potted trees (and shrubs!) on my deck. So envious of the warmer climates that they can do that. Anyone try that here in this zone? I thought I'd try a small patio tree (flowering plum) that's z4 hardy and overwinter it in the garage.

Storing in the garage should work as long as it keeps the pots from freezing too hard. You'll have to watch them in the spring so they don't start growing in the garage.

A few years ago I started some amur maackia trees from seeds. They've been growing well for the last 3 years. I keep them in plastic pots and overwinter them in the garage. They are hardy to zone 3, which I hope, makes them better for pots.

Here is a link that might be useful: Amur Maackia
