winter care of bromiliads

Somehow I ended up with one at one of the swaps this year. I'm sorry, I can't remember who had them, or which swap it was at! But it's been a sad little thing sitting here in the house until a couple of weeks ago. I happened to catch some gardening advice on channel 9 (Fox) in the morning before leaving for work.

I don't remember the fellows name, but he said to fill the "vase" of the plant (that area on top where a small hole appears as the leaves grow out) with warm water, and to keep the soil dry to slightly moist. The idea is that the plant will use the water held in the leaves and to refill that whenever you see it is empty.

It works! The bromiliad looks fantastic! It's a nice dark green color and the leaves are open. Now I'd love to see it bloom! Maybe this will help your plant.
