Is Purple Fountain Grass sterile?

I think I read somewhere that Purple Fountain Grass is sterile... Can anyone tell me for sure? I'd sure hate to bring it to the seed swap if it is :-)

Thanks! Joyce

I have read the same thing- but I did find some seed heads that look like there is viable seed in them- I am going to try what I found this year. I think that they MOSTLY do not produce viable seed kinda like the sweet grass I have. It produces pretty little heads- but MOSTLY- very empty of any thing viable.

Julie's right...Darke says that Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum'/'Purpureum'/'Atropurpureum'/'Cupreum' (different names for the same plant) "rarely sets seed".

Thanks Julie and abgardeneer! I'll just go ahead and do what you're doing Julie... plant the seeds I have and see if they actually grow anything ;-)

I have had my purple fountain grass sprout in near by containers. And I've even had to pull some sprouts out of near by beds. I purchased mine from my local Homedepot. They are gorgeous.

Hey- Good for you RL!- I wish some of my winter sown purple fountain grass seeds would have sprouted- I guess your sucess and my failure may be in part to our zone differences- there are many things that grow for you that I would love to grow here- but I know that I can not- Such are the chalenges that face all gardeners-

I have purple fountain grass as well and would like to know if there is another way to propagate other than by separating the rootball? Im thinking of either buying more of taking apart the one that I have.
