Planting fruit trees in Minnesota: spring or fall planting?

I've been going over my extensive "wants" list of fruit and nut trees and shrubs, but that pesky checkbook just isn't cooperating with my original idea to do one massive spring planting around the farm. However, if I were to split it up and plant some in the spring and some in the fall, I could more than afford it.

What I'm thinking is that I should plant bare-root plants this spring, such as pears and peaches I have to mail-order, to give them time to establish themselves, and wait until fall to plant potted plants, such as apple trees I can buy locally.

Does that sound right, or should I revise my plans? Thanks.
