Can someone complete the name for me? The marker has flaked off the package on a couple of letters and I can't seem to get it right (have been searching online):

Large purple Amerat??S - the way itis now, it looks like Ameratnus but I don't get any hits on Google with that.

Thanks :-)

It wasn't my seed, but I'd guess maybe amaranthus

RE: From Seed swap - Large Purple Amerat??s

I would bet the seed came from Cheri- she had a purple amaranthus that grew quite large- I believe it was 'Intense Purple' that I gave her a seedling or more of- if the leaves are more green that purple- it may be 'Polish' amaranthus. Either way- the seeds have been saved for many generations- so I expect some varience from those themes-
But it should still be pretty- and the leaves should be edible- as well as the seed heads! Expect them to re-seed-
They will germinate in warm soil- and will grow to maturity quite quickly even if you direct sow in the spring-

Thanks, Suzinnia and Julie! I think you are right. After reading your posts, I pulled out the package and compared the seed to some that I already knew was Amaranthus, I can see that it is identical in shape and size. A different shade, one was pale pink and the other more of the deeper purple color, but they are definitely the same kind of seed. And now that I know the history of the ones from Cheri, they will be even more fun to grow :-)

those are mine,
Some of them go 4-5 ft tall 2-3 ft wide, I'll try and find a picture.
