Yews can burn over the winter from sun and wind. If so, hopefully the new growth covers up the damage.

I was walking through my neighborhood last week and noticed alot of burn on many different evergreens. Much of the problem is likely due to the dry weather going into winter. The evergreens are not wearing it well...I have a couple that look pretty bad as well, and I was watering till the bitter end...as proven by the hoses that have just shown up, strewn across the lawn, now that the snow is gone.

I think there seems to be more burning on evergreens than usual this spring.

I planted a Microbiota "on a stick" last year and it is starting to burn pretty badly.

I've also seen alot of winter burn. I blame that week plus of below zero temperature in January. Now that you know this shrub is suseptible make sure to keep it well watered and mulched in the fall. Anti-transpirants are meant to help with this also, but not everyone agrees they work.

This is a good reason not to buy shrubs at the big box stores, unless you know exactly what your getting. They all sell cultivars that are much more prone to winter burn here in MN, in addition to some that usually do well. Capitata, Taunton and Dark Green Spreader usually are OK (but not always). Hicksii and Runyan belong further south. I saw Bobink sold last year and I don't know how it would fair.
