Protecting Azaleas from Sawfly caterpillar

Last year my azaleas were stipped bare of leaves overnight. I've never had this happen so it surprised me. I posted a message on GardenWeb and was told that this was caused by a Sawfly caterpillar. Has anyone else had this happen? What do I put on my azalea's and when? I'm planning early this year.
