good time to fertilize rhododendrons?

Going on my third or fourth year with my rhodos. They take ten times more work than all my other plants, and for all my work, they are kind enough to stay alive. For the first time this year, they actually have a few buds on them.

My question is, should I fertilize them in the spring? If I do, when is the best time? I heard using ammonium sulfate is good. Have other folks used that?

Last year, every morning, I poured leftover coffee into my watering can, topped it off with water, and watered them to keep the soil acidic. I fertilized them with bat guano (high phosphorus) in the fall.
