I think I am finally going to plant some asparagus this year. If I acted on this every time I thought about it the last few years, I'd be eating asparagus this year! Can anyone recommend where I should buy the crowns? I'm thinking of planting the Jersey King hybrid, but feel free to make suggestions re: the variety, too.
Thanks, Sally |

I've seen one for sale called Purple Passion that has purple spears. I think it was at Bachman's. Never tasted it though.

Purple tomatoes, purple carrots, I wonder about this purple obsession!?! lol Seriously, I realize it's part of a larger trend, but they just don't taste the same to me. Sally, sorry to chime in about something off-topic. I have any info for you, but I'm sure it won't be a long wait for more folks here to chime in.

I ordered I think it was 40 crowns from Gurney's. They had assorted lots on the "Buy one, get one free" page and a coupon for $25 off a $50 order. Assuming they are not out of stock, NOW I have to figure out where the heck I'm gonna put 'em. Sometimes I could just slap myself.....

I just planted (a few days ago) asparagus seed, variety Mary Washington. I've raised asparagus from crowns before (it's been a few years - before the move to Minnesota 11 years ago) but I don't recall the variety, and I've never tried seeds before. I do think that I will also purchase some crowns, maybe even two year crowns so that we will be able to start eating it next year. I understand it will take a minimum of 3 years to get the first taste of any resulting from the seed. Wish I had some helpful info to add, Sallym, but I don't. And just couldn't resist joining in anyway :-)

At our old house I went to our local feed mill to get asparagus crowns. They were really helpful in showing what types are best for our area. I ended up with Mary Washington and Jersey and they worked really well. As jel48 said, they do take approximately 3 years before you can harvest them, but it is definately worth the wait. I just started some Mary Washington seeds a few days ago too....but I think I might head to the feed mill and get some crowns too, just in case! I am not sure where you live, but the feed mills are a great resource for your veggie garden. They only carry varieties that do well in your area.

RE: asparagus -- followup question

I've been thinking on this, and I might just well put some crowns in myself, what with the prices of asparagus in the grocery store. I don't have a feed mill nearby. What other local nurseries do y'all recommend for vegetable seedlings and possibly a. crowns?
