trimming geraniums

Hello,

Before last winter, I dug up my geraniums, put them in paper bags and in the basement. (thank you for those of you who gave me advice on this!) This weekend, I replanted them in planters outside and watered them. Since my basement is not too cool and I had left them there until now, I wasn't sure how they would do, but so far, I'm happy to report that some of the stems were still green and some had green leaves on them.

My question is, should I trim the geraniums now so they'll grow better and also they won't grow too big and bark-y? I did not trim them at all before storing them for the winter.

If I should trim them, how should I do so? Should I cut only leaving the main trunk, or maybe just shorten the branches coming off of the main trunk? Should I leave at least some leaves (so they can make nutrition from the sun)?

I found a few instructions on the web, but it wasn't clear or I wasn't sure if it applied to trimming at this time in the season.

Thank you in advance for your advice!
