Shrub question

I am very new to gardening and I would like to plant some shrubs around my house. I would particularly like some shrubs that have nice fall colors. Smallish, maybe 3-5 feet. My question is, should I wait until fall to buy the shrubs so I can see what they look like? Also, can anyone recommend some shrubs with nice fall colors?

I am sure there are many but I love the fall color of the Burning Bush. You can get them in a dwarf (or compact) size that would be on the smaller side of what you're looking for.

You might want to wait until fall. I've heard of people buying a burning bush plant and being disappointed in the color. It could be in part due to the conditions it was planted in, but there does seem to be some influence based on each unique plant. For whatever reason, if the color isn't consistent across the species, you may want to use effort proportionate to the importance of that attribute. Best wishes brightening up your landscape.
