Help with plant suggestions please

I just put in a 25' stone wall around my patio with a 10 inch planter (like a trough) running through the center. Now I have to figure out what to plant in it! It faces south southwest, so lots of afternoon sun. The logical choice for me would have been petunias, but those pesky Japanese beetle love them, so those are not an option anymore. I am open to any ideas. Obviously I have a lot of space to cover and want it be as inexpensive as possible. I don't want really tall plants in there. Also, are there some perennials that I could use as annuals? I have access to some from friends/neighbors since they would be way to expensive to buy. I know they probably wouldn't survive the winter not being in the ground or they wouldn't thrive if they did. I am just looking for some more options as I begin to experiment.
