Question: Tree Peony

I have had a tree peony for about 10 years and I noticed this year there are shoots poking up next to the plant. I haven't dug down yet but I am wondering if this is the root stock instead of the tree peony. The tree peony itself is putting out leaves like gangbusters. Anyone else have this happen?

Yes, you should be able to tell by the leaf if it is root stock or the tree peony foliage. The tree peony I used to hhave didn't make through a very cold winter, but the root stock grew and had nice flowers with a fantastic scent.

It could be seedlings.....
I have only had one survive in the many years I have left a few seed pods go- it is about 4 years old now and still not showing any sign of thinking about blooming. But I leave it to do it's thing and hope that someday I will see it bloom.
