Growing flowering dogwood trees

I was planning on planting a red or pink flowering dogwood tree this year. However, my local nursery said that these aren't hardy in MN. They're sold in other nurseries and through the arbor society. I'd like to hear from someone else who has grown one. Did it survive?

Many have tried, a few have succeeded (temporarily), and almost none have ever had more than a few blooms. Some literature says zone 4 hardy, but that is New England zone 4, not MN. For dogwood trees, that makes a big difference.

Experimenting is always a fun and worthy endeavor. You just may be the one to stumble on the perfect genetics, but don't expect it.

The garden center near my house, which carries plants that push the zone, carried some several years ago. I have not seen them there since. Too many returned dead?
