Flattened shrubs

I'm sure I'm not the only one who needs to repair flattened shrubs after this winter. I'm pretty confident that I can whack my bridal veil spirea down to the ground without any long-term ill effects, but does anyone have advice on barberries, red-leaf roses, or yews? Are those things that I can trim back hard, or do I need to gradually remove the now-nearly-horizontal branches slowly over the next few seasons? I'm nervous about the barberry in particular - I've never needed to do any kind of pruning on it so I'm not sure how it will respond.
