Planting in a old farm tile?

Hello!

I am looking for suggestions--I have a old clay farm tile that I would like to plant perennials in. It is 30" tall and 30" across. As we live in Zone 4 with freezing in the winter months, my husband said there would be no way I could plant in this without having it eventually crack because of the freezing and thawing. I'm wondering about filling it about 2/3 full of gravel and then putting potting soil in the top 1/3. Would this be enough drainage to keep the soil from freezing and thawing? The other idea would be to try to find a large 30" pot to fit into it, and then take that out and bury it in my garden in the fall. I was thinking a clematis that would drape down the sides of this glazed tile would be pretty-but I'm open to suggestions. Thanks! Hostagal
