Living Sculpture

Yep, I want to make a living sculpture out of willow. I want to start with a chair just to get the feel of it and then if I like that go on to a person or animal.

I have one book on it from England so the growing and planting times are a bit difficult to figure out, but I will do it.

I am looking for a source of the willow canes. I need freshly cut willow canes that are first or second year growth and it looks like they use them about 6' long. They could be longer. The other idea I have had is to get shorter ones, plant them this year and grow them to use next year.

The idea is you use the fresh cut willow planting it in place to make the sculpture. It will root and there you go a living sculpture.

The web site I am adding is in the UK so I can't get the willow from them, but it gives you an idea of what I am looking for.

Anyone have a great place for me to try to get it?

I know I ran across some sites when I wrote an article about this topic a while back. Did you try googling, or are you looking for local sources? If the later, the Arb's library staff have a database of nursery's and what they sell.

Nothing like asking a question and then not getting back to it. I have been so busy and am not sure what I did with all of my time.

I am looking for local sources and will check with the Arb.

Hi there Pauline!
Um- look alongside creekbeds- ponds and sloughs. There are river willow all over the place!
I think there are some just off of the tracks behind my yard.....

Julie, Here in the city we can't go cutting down plants around the creek beds, ponds and sloughs. They are either in peoples yards or on park land. I will have to take a trip to the country or over to see you or sureturtle. First I need to read up more about which will to use. My book talks about the willow in the UK.

Hey there Zen-
The willow near my house are on railroad land and or undeveloped land next to the tracks- I don't think they would mind or even notice a few branch tips selectivly trimmed away to use for hardwood propagating-
