Dianthus 'Eastern Star'

Found this neat cultivar at Gerten's and couldn't resist. The literature is ambivalent about its hardiness (seems it's either 3 or 5). Anyone have any experience with this beauty? GaryStPaul

Should be hardy to zone 4.

Link below to Dave's Garden website listing for it...

It's a interesting flower, I think I'll have to add that to my wish list.

Here is a link that might be useful: Daves Garden - Dianthus Eastern Star

Eastern Star is a trademark name, its legit (registered)botanical name is Dianthus 'Red Dwarf', plant patent #14437

I'd be alittle wary of hybrid dianthus being blatantly hardy in zone 4 Minnesota, it would be best if always under snowcover or loosely mulched under dry straw or leavesw over the winter there away from the winds.

Thanks for the replies. Glad to know the specifics on the name and, yes, I'll take precautions this winter. I'd love to see it back next spring, since it's so beautiful in the garden right now. GaryStPaul

I bought "Eastern Star" on impulse at Home Depot last August - was still throwing out blooms when frost hit. With no protection other than good snow cover, it came through the winter.

Ah, another impulse buyer! Very encouraging report, thanks. GSP
