Eupatorium Chocolate... dud?

I bought Eupatorium Chocolate last year and was pleased with it.... thrilled actually. It was a 1 gallon plant, about 18" tall and 12" wide when I planted it in June.

By September, it was a gorgeous blooming 3 foot globe. Fantastic.

This spring, it was absolutely the last to emerge... maybe just 2 weeks ago. And today, it's only about 2-3" tall. I have it in 2 different spots, one part sun, one full sun.

Is this one I can expect to do better later in the season or is this just a dud variety here in Minnesota?

Someone did ask me once "If you have luck growing this, can you tell me your secret?"

HELP! Does this grow well for you? What conditions?

I have had mine about 4 years,now. It is late to emerge.
Mine is in a shady area and does nicely there.

We have wild Eupatorium growing in or woods in the shadier spots that's why I put the "Chocolate" in the shade as well.

Hope this helps a bit....

One in more sun is about 6-8 inches, another in some shade is about 4 inches. It's very late to emerge and is a slow starter, but I find it worth the wait. It's great in the fall.

I have two and they're both in part sun to part shade. They are always one of the last plants to awaken each spring. Mine are about 2 1/2 ft now and they are great come fall.

Mine is in mostly shade,and is about 10 inches tall right now.

I may move it forward a bit as it doesn't get as tall as I had expected. The wild ones get close to 3 feet tall, this one only gets to be around 2 feet.
