transplanting question - haircut or not?

I have been taking advantage of our very few cooler rainy days recently to transplant some Siberian iris, and daylilies. I've always read that you should give the plant a hair cut, ie trim back the leaves to make transplanting less successful. However, those plants which I did not get around to cutting back seem to be doing better- a daylily is even about to bloom. It was moved, not divided. The other ones are certainly still alive but not producing new leaves. What has your experience been?
