Clematis killing Creeper?

ascoli

A friend suggested I plant some clematis around my Virginia Creeper so I'd have some nice blooms among the vines. I did so last year. The creeper is about 4 years old and lush, the clematis is starting to climb about 2 feet up. But it looks to me like the clematis is choking the creeper and that the creeper vines that are being climbed are dying. Am I seeing this correctly? Thanks in advance.
