I plan to try a fall crop of beets and peas, but I don't know when to put them in. I know the soil temperature can foul up germination of anything planted directly in the ground. I you are setting out seedlings, I don't see why they can't be planted anytime. Carmellia

I, too, need to find out about both beets and peas. A kohlrabi seedling put in the ground a month ago is ready to harvest this week! So I put in another pack of kohlrabi, figuring I'll have it in August. Collards and Swiss Chard also went in, all tiny little starts. They'll need more than a month, I'm guessing.

I'm thinking that I'll plant the beets in the next couple weeks, and peas the first week of August.

An off topic note: this year is the first year I've used square-foot principles. In my little 3x8 bed I have 7 tomatoes, one bush summer squash, 3 eggplant, 3 bush cukes, 18 bush beans, 1 watermelon (planted at the edge to sprawl outside the raised bed), 1 kohlrabi and a bunch of basil (oh, and the little guys I mentioned above). No fertilizer, just good soil and plenty of water.

I'm stunned at 1) how few weeds there have been, 2) how lush the plants are, 3) how many blossoms have set fruit. A whole family's worth of eating out of a little box!! It's the easiest, most productive garden I've EVER had!

I found a webpage at the U of M extension site that give last frost dates for fall. Just count backwards and plant for fall harvests!
