Dogwood not blooming

I've planted quite a few dogwoods (red and yellow twig) but only a few have bloomed. Some are tall and lanky and sparse for leaves. They're planted in an area that's part sun/shade. Does anyone know why? Should I prune the tops of lanky ones to get them to branch out? What do I use for fertilizer? This is a large area.
