Help! Something is killing my Siberian Iris.

Last fall I divided and planted two large clumps of siberian iris. Most are doing just fine, but one of the divisions is dying out. The leaves turn brown, and when I pull out the dead parts they're covered with this slimey, light brown, almost flakey stuff. I can't figure out what it is. Any ideas what this could be and what I can do to stop it?
